Client context

The Antoni Jurasz University Hospital and Jan Biziel University Hospital are two of the largest high-specialty medical facilities in Poland, serving a broad regional population. Together, they operate across dozens of departments and units, admitting over 70,000 patients annually and delivering more than 385,000 specialist consultations.

The challenge

Hospital operations relied on multiple systems, including HIS, LIS, and RIS, which were not fully integrated.

At the same time, key processes related to medical documentation, patient registration, and service coordination were either partially digital or still dependent on manual workflows.

This made it difficult to:

  • access complete patient records in real time
  • exchange data between systems and external entities
  • provide patients with convenient access to services
  • ensure compliance with healthcare data regulations

As a result, both patients and medical staff faced delays, inefficiencies, and limited visibility into critical information.

What it took to deliver results

To improve patient experience and operational efficiency, the hospitals needed a system that could:

  • centralize electronic medical records (EDM)
  • integrate with existing hospital systems (HIS, LIS, RIS)
  • enable digital patient services such as appointment booking and e-orders
  • support secure data exchange with external systems
  • comply with healthcare data standards and regulations

The goal was to create a unified, secure, and scalable digital healthcare environment.

The solution

An integrated hospital information system was developed to support electronic medical records and patient-facing e-services.

The platform connects existing hospital systems and enables seamless data exchange between internal and external systems, ensuring that information flows consistently across the ecosystem.

Key functionalities include:

  • electronic medical documentation (EDM) processing
  • online patient registration and appointment management
  • electronic orders for diagnostics and external services

The system was designed to meet strict regulatory requirements while improving accessibility and usability for both staff and patients.

It was built using scalable and secure technologies:

  • Python for backend services
  • PostgreSQL for data storage
  • Angular for the user interface
  • Nginx for web server and traffic management
  • Secure data storage solutions for medical records

How it works

The platform centralizes medical data and enables real-time access to patient records across systems.

Electronic medical records are stored in a secure repository and can be accessed, updated, and shared with authorized entities.

Patients can use a web portal to schedule appointments, manage their data, and access medical documentation.

The system supports standardized data exchange formats such as HL7 CDA and DICOM, enabling interoperability with external systems and service providers.

Impact on operations

The integration of systems and introduction of e-services improved how information is accessed and shared across the hospitals.

Medical staff can now retrieve and update patient data more efficiently, reducing time spent on administrative tasks.

At the same time, standardized data exchange enables smoother collaboration with external laboratories and service providers.

Business impact

The system delivered measurable improvements across key areas:

  • Centralized access to medical records, improving data availability
  • Faster patient service, through online registration and reduced paperwork
  • Improved data exchange, enabling better coordination with external entities
  • Reduced administrative workload, through digital workflows
  • Compliance with healthcare regulations, ensuring secure data handling
  • Improved patient experience, with easier access to services and documentation
